Why make our own Henna?

You’ve undoubtedly seen them: pre-filled henna cones from your local Indian supermarket, or craft store, or even bodega. Some of the cones even look pretty on the outside, tempting you to buy one and try it at home. But here’s what you might not know about what’s on the INSIDE: What’s really in there?

Here’s the tricky thing about henna: Henna is a plant. The henna plant grows best in hot, dry climates, and grows wild in regions experiencing cycles of drought and monsoon rains. Specifically India, Egypt, Sudan and Morocco. Generally, the native habitat of henna is the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Southern Asia and Northern Australasia's semi-arid regions. The leaves of the henna plant are stripped off and dried out, and then ground into a powder. Once the henna powder is mixed into a paste and scooped into cones, the paste needs to be frozen immediately, and kept frozen until you are ready to use it. Once defrosted for use, the paste is only good for an average of THREE DAYS. The moment it starts defrosting, you are on the clock to use up that cone within the next 72 hours, to get the maximum staining effect.

So now you may be wondering: “If this is all true, then how come I keep finding these cones anywhere BUT the freezer case of my local Indian grocery?… And how do they even make the trip from India, TO the local grocery, which I’m sure takes more than only 3 days to complete?” Easy. Chemicals. Certain chemicals are added to the henna paste. These chemicals are good for preserving the paste so that the dye shows up brightly on your skin. But those same chemicals aren’t necessarily good FOR your skin. Some people with more sensitive skin might have allergies to these chemicals, and then mistakenly assume they are allergic to henna. And since we are not in the business of putting people in danger, we always INSIST on purchasing ORGANIC HENNA LEAF POWDER and mixing it ourselves. That way, we know EXACTLY what goes into it. And that means NO chemicals. No way, no how! Not EVER. All you will find in our paste is our homemade recipe of lemon juice, a few drops of cajeput oil or lavender oil, molasses, and organic all natural henna. We always buy ours from our friends at Artistic Adornment, because it’s a brand we can trust.

“…a quiet nod to original motifs but also modern and playful.”

"I am always in awe of henna art. Lenore has such a steady hand and a creative mind that the images she placed on my arms were both a quiet nod to original motifs but also modern and playful. “

— Jenny L., Astoria Queens, NYC

“…the henna you use smells soooooo GOOD!”

“I cannot stop staring at my hands now. It’s as if they don’t even belong to me. They belong to some other magical, elegant creature that I have never been before. And the henna you use smells soooooo GOOD! I keep on sniffing them and swooning. Thank you for this magic!”

— L. Mandel, LIC, NYC
